Mobile App Update:
Disneyland+

AT-A-GLANCE

With this project, I worked to deliver an update version for the current Disneyland mobile app by adding more advanced features focusing on saving time for visitors so they can make the most out of their experience. Beyond those exclusive features, the user interface is aimed at being more appealing for new visitors while keeping the original Disney vibe.

WHAT CLIENT NEEDS

The current official Disneyland mobile app already has general planning tools but still not an essential tool to download. To make the product most successful, this update version tailors the user experience to occasional visitors and aims to be the main tool of their experience at Disneyland.

Time management is a huge problem

The Orange County publication reported that Disneyland has grown wildly over recent years but its waiting time is still the biggest concern. The Disneyland current app covers some features that help users save time, such as real-time tracking, planning your day, ordering food, etc.

But unfortunately, waiting in line is not the only issue.

"What if..." is the solution

This newest version of Disneyland mobile app help users maximize their time by targeting common wasting-time scenarios that the current app hasn't tackled yet.

Design Process

Learning from real experiences

Initially, I reflected on my Disneyland trip in January, I spent my time waiting in lines for attractions that I would never have gone to if I had known a little more about it. My hypothesis was that there are still more significant time wasters that haven’t been covered in the current app.

Pain Points

Users also have to spend extra of their time due to not being aware of unexpected situations, along with being distracted by parades, waiting for meals and restrooms, going to the wrong destination, finding friends, etc.

Persona & User Journey

To understand the users, I carefully read through all the previous research & users' comments online. I conducted 7 interviews to learn more about my friends' experience and read online comments on Quora & Twitter. Then, I incorporated the insights into the user persona named Leo.

Magic from Sketches

The Orange County publication reported that Disneyland has grown wildly over recent years but its waiting time is still the biggest concern. The Disneyland current app covers some features that help users save time, such as real-time tracking, planning your day, ordering food, etc.

But unfortunately, waiting in line is not the only issue.

Testing & Refining

The first round of presenting static compositions in front of the class, I got some feedback and inputs related to the unfriendly and complicated UI of the current app. From there, I gave more focuses on simplify the content, call-to-action, of each feature.

Final Key Features

1. Review Rides' Rating

To avoid waiting in lines for hours then get into the "boring" rides, The Disney Genie Service now can help visitors save their time smartly by providing a 15 second POV of a person on that ride and its rating.

2. Group Location Tracking

After checking in, the group tickets will be synced to Disneyland+ system and users can easily see their family member's locations appeared on the map. They can also filter and choose who do they want to to see on their map.

3. Genie+ Private Service

Customers need to purchase the Genie+ Pass to access this feature. When they have their tickets synced to the app, users just simply open their Genie+ Pass tab and verify their access. They will see the exclusive map to the nearest Disneyland's private restrooms & restaurants around the park.

Design System

Keeping the magic Disney vibe, more contrasting colors together with a clearer hierarchy were added in the UI of Disneyland app.
